What is Periodontics?

Periodontics is the branch of dentistry that focuses on the health of our gums and jawbone — the tissues that support our teeth. The field of periodontics treats conditions such as bone loss, gum recession and periodontal – gum disease.

A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease and in the placement of dental implants.

What exactly does a periodontist do?

Gum disease is inflammation of the gums that can progress to affect the bone that surrounds and supports our teeth. It is caused by bacteria in plaque – a sticky film that constantly forms on our teeth. If not removed through daily brushing and flossing, plaque can build up and the bacteria can inflame the gums, eventually extending to underlying tissues and bone that support the teeth. This can cause teeth to become loose, fall out or require extraction by a dentist.
